Mining Industry

Mining is an important part of Alaska's economy, providing jobs for thousands of Alaskans.  Alaska's mining industry includes exploration, mine development and mineral production.  Alaska's mines produce zinc, lead, gold, silver and coal, as well as construction materials such as sand, gravel and rock.

2009 Alaska Mining Industry

  • 3,300 direct mining jobs
  • 5,200 total direct and indirect jobs attributed to Alaska's mining industry
  • $320 million in annual payroll for direct and indirect jobs attributed to Alaska's mining industry
  • $12.3 million in local government revenue
  • $35 million in state government revenue
  • $48.9 million in other state government-related revenues
  • $39.8 million to Alaska Native Corporations in royalties, shareholder jobs and business partnerships

  • $160 million spent in exploration
  • $262 million spent on mine construction
  • $750 million in mining exports
