The Pebble Project is situated in the Bristol Bay region of southwest Alaska, about 200 miles southwest of Anchorage and 70 miles from tidewater at Cook Inlet. The proximity to tidewater and the moderate terrain and elevation are all beneficial features for project development. The project site is less than 20 air miles northwest of the villages of Iliamna, Nondalton and Newhalen, within the Lake and Peninsula Borough.
The Pebble Property is situated on state land designated for mineral exploration and development through two democratically driven land-use planning processes. Five parcels of land within the Bristol Bay Area Plan were specifically identified as containing "significant mineral potential," including the area surrounding Pebble. In total, these lands represent only 2.7% of the planning area, which includes vast areas designated for the protection of fish and wildlife populations and their habitats.
The Pebble Partnership's goal is to design a project that operates safely while preserving healthy fisheries and other valued natural and heritage resources in the Bristol Bay region.
The Pebble Partnership is assessing infrastructure options for the Pebble Project. No final decisions have been made, but components being evaluated include a 104-mile controlled-access industrial road, a pipeline for concentrate transport, a tidewater port, and power lines that would service the project and nearby communities.
